How to Choose the Right Flooring for a Sunroom

So, you have decided to go for it. You have decided a sunroom is for you. Great! At Innovative Livingspaces we love working with homeowners to design and build their dream addition. Even if you are not working with us to make your sunroom a reality, we want to help you along the way. Here’s how to pick the best flooring for your new sunroom.

Carpet

First up, we have carpet. An ever-popular mainstay in most homes. After all, it’s soft to the touch, cozy, and just downright homey. Carpet does well in all four seasons, not adding to heat in the Summer while providing warmth in the Winter. You may want to be mindful, however, of the color you choose. This is because with all the sun a sunroom offers, it is likely that your carpet will fade rather quickly. On top of that, you may have to be aware of moisture levels in a sunroom. Excess moisture can present problems for absorbent materials like carpet, so it is best to consider these factors before deciding.

Concrete

Concrete is a tough and entirely customizable option. You can score it, paint it, or glaze it with epoxy coatings. This allows you the freedom to create any look you enjoy. Concrete does especially well in the Summer months since it absorbs heat. But you probably also know that in colder months, concrete can be very chilly. Without rugs and slippers, you may not be able to enjoy your four-season sunroom as much as you like. It is also worth noting that concrete can be quite slippery when wet. So, if you plan on housing that spa-like hot tub in your sunroom, you may want to be wary of concrete.

Hardwood

For most, hardwood flooring is as timeless as it gets. It will last a lifetime and offers warmth and elegance to any room. As with carpet, though, it is important to be watchful of humidity levels. Because hardwood is a natural product, it may not respond well if exposed to too much moisture. Also, choosing lighter shades will minimize any visible fading if it should occur.

Luxury Vinyl Tile

The popularity of luxury vinyl tile has been skyrocketing in recent years. This is due in no small part to its seemingly faultless attributes. LVT is basically life-proof. It is water-resistant, durable, and affordable. It comes in realistic finishes, including stone and hardwood. And if you are careful to choose a tile that has UV protection, your floors will not run the risk of dramatic fading.

In the end, whatever flooring you choose should be something you love. We just hope that we have helped you weigh out the pros and cons of some if you were on the fence.
